Gratitude Begins with How We See Ourselves

November is National Gratitude Month, but I believe gratitude is something we should practice all year long. Using gratitude to navigate life, strengthen our relationships, and most importantly to honor our relationship with ourselves. Gratitude doesn’t mean pretending everything is perfect or ignoring the things we wish were different. To me, it really means learning to acknowledge what is still present and supporting us, even in the middle of life’s challenges.

In our relationship with others, gratitude reminds us to recognize the people who show up for us, appreciate the little things, and express thanks while we can. Sometimes a simple, “I appreciate you” goes so far for the people in our lives. But what about the relationship we have with ourselves? How often do we acknowledge the wholeness of ourselves? Or even give ourselves credit for making it through a difficult season? When was the last time we showed appreciation to our body, or the small and big steps it took to become who we are today?

It’s so easy to focus on what we lack or haven’t accomplished yet but gratitude invites us to shift our perspective. Not by dismissing what we wish could change, but by making space to acknowledge what is already here. So this months invitation is to use our journal to explore gratitude beyond a list of things we are grateful for. Let’s reflect on lessons, relationships, unexpected moments, and the parts of ourselves that deserve more appreciation.

As Oprah Winfrey reminds us:

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.”
